2013-01-22lib: devres: Introduce devm_ioremap_resource()Thierry Reding
The devm_request_and_ioremap() function is very useful and helps avoid a whole lot of boilerplate. However, one issue that keeps popping up is its lack of a specific error code to determine which of the steps that it performs failed. Furthermore, while the function gives an example and suggests what error code to return on failure, a wide variety of error codes are used throughout the tree. In an attempt to fix these problems, this patch adds a new function that drivers can transition to. The devm_ioremap_resource() returns a pointer to the remapped I/O memory on success or an ERR_PTR() encoded error code on failure. Callers can check for failure using IS_ERR() and determine its cause by extracting the error code using PTR_ERR(). devm_request_and_ioremap() is implemented as a wrapper around the new API and return NULL on failure as before. This ensures that backwards compatibility is maintained until all users have been converted to the new API, at which point the old devm_request_and_ioremap() function should be removed. A semantic patch is included which can be used to convert from the old devm_request_and_ioremap() API to the new devm_ioremap_resource() API. Some non-trivial cases may require manual intervention, though. Almost every platform_driver does the three steps get_resource, request_mem_region, ioremap. This does not only lead to a lot of code duplication, but also a huge number of similar error strings and inconsistent error codes on failure. So, introduce a helper function which simplifies remapping a resource and make it hard to do something wrong and add documentation for it. 2009-04-16Driver Core: early platform driverMagnus Damm
V3 of the early platform driver implementation. Platform drivers are great for embedded platforms because we can separate driver configuration from the actual driver. So base addresses, interrupts and other configuration can be kept with the processor or board code, and the platform driver can be reused by many different platforms. For early devices we have nothing today. For instance, to configure early timers and early serial ports we cannot use platform devices. This because the setup order during boot. Timers are needed before the platform driver core code is available. The same goes for early printk support. Early in this case means before initcalls. These early drivers today have their configuration either hard coded or they receive it using some special configuration method. This is working quite well, but if we want to support both regular kernel modules and early devices then we need to have two ways of configuring the same driver. A single way would be better. The early platform driver patch is basically a set of functions that allow drivers to register themselves and architecture code to locate them and probe. Registration happens through early_param(). The time for the probe is decided by the architecture code. See Documentation/driver-model/platform.txt for more details. Implement device resource management, in short, devres. A device driver can allocate arbirary size of devres data which is associated with a release function. On driver detach, release function is invoked on the devres data, then, devres data is freed. devreses are typed by associated release functions. Some devreses are better represented by single instance of the type while others need multiple instances sharing the same release function. Both usages are supported. devreses can be grouped using devres group such that a device driver can easily release acquired resources halfway through initialization or selectively release resources (e.g. resources for port 1 out of 4 ports). 2005-10-28[PATCH] DRIVER MODEL: Get rid of the obsolete tri-level suspend/resume callbacksRussell King
In PM v1, all devices were called at SUSPEND_DISABLE level. Then all devices were called at SUSPEND_SAVE_STATE level, and finally SUSPEND_POWER_DOWN level. However, with PM v2, to maintain compatibility for platform devices, I arranged for the PM v2 suspend/resume callbacks to call the old PM v1 suspend/resume callbacks three times with each level in order so that existing drivers continued to work. Since this is obsolete infrastructure which is no longer necessary, we can remove it. Here's an (untested) patch to do exactly that.
