2013-07-21nbd: correct disconnect behaviorPaul Clements
commit c378f70adbc1bbecd9e6db145019f14b2f688c7c upstream. Currently, when a disconnect is requested by the user (via NBD_DISCONNECT ioctl) the return from NBD_DO_IT is undefined (it is usually one of several error codes). This means that nbd-client does not know if a manual disconnect was performed or whether a network error occurred. Because of this, nbd-client's persist mode (which tries to reconnect after error, but not after manual disconnect) does not always work correctly. This change fixes this by causing NBD_DO_IT to always return 0 if a user requests a disconnect. This means that nbd-client can correctly either persist the connection (if an error occurred) or disconnect (if the user requested it). 2013-07-21cgroup: fix RCU accesses to task->cgroupsTejun Heo
commit 14611e51a57df10240817d8ada510842faf0ec51 upstream. task->cgroups is a RCU pointer pointing to struct css_set. A task switches to a different css_set on cgroup migration but a css_set doesn't change once created and its pointers to cgroup_subsys_states aren't RCU protected. task_subsys_state[_check]() is the macro to acquire css given a task and subsys_id pair. It RCU-dereferences task->cgroups->subsys[] not task->cgroups, so the RCU pointer task->cgroups ends up being dereferenced without read_barrier_depends() after it. It's broken. Fix it by introducing task_css_set[_check]() which does RCU-dereference on task->cgroups. task_subsys_state[_check]() is reimplemented to directly dereference ->subsys[] of the css_set returned from task_css_set[_check](). This removes some of sparse RCU warnings in cgroup. v2: Fixed unbalanced parenthsis and there's no need to use rcu_dereference_raw() when !CONFIG_PROVE_RCU. Both spotted by Li. 2013-07-18workqueues: Introduce new flag WQ_POWER_EFFICIENT for power oriented workqueuesViresh Kumar
Workqueues can be performance or power-oriented. Currently, most workqueues are bound to the CPU they were created on. This gives good performance (due to cache effects) at the cost of potentially waking up otherwise idle cores (Idle from scheduler's perspective. Which may or may not be physically idle) just to process some work. To save power, we can allow the work to be rescheduled on a core that is already awake. Workqueues created with the WQ_UNBOUND flag will allow some power savings. However, we don't change the default behaviour of the system. To enable power-saving behaviour, a new config option CONFIG_WQ_POWER_EFFICIENT needs to be turned on. This option can also be overridden by the workqueue.power_efficient boot parameter. tj: Updated config description and comments. 2013-07-17mm: make vmstat_update periodic run conditionalGilad Ben-Yossef
vmstat_update runs every second from the work queue to update statistics and drain per cpu pages back into the global page allocator. This is useful in most circumstances but is wasteful if the CPU doesn't actually make any VM activity. This can happen in the situtation that the CPU is idle or running a CPU bound long term task (e.g. CPU isolation), in which case the periodic vmstate_update timer needlessly itnerrupts the CPU. This patch tries to make vmstat_update schedule itself for the next round only if there was any work for it to do in the previous run. The assumption is that if for a whole second we didn't see any VM activity it is reasnoable to assume that the CPU is not using the VM because it is idle or runs a long term single CPU bound task. A new single unbound system work queue item is scheduled periodically to monitor CPUs that have their vmstat_update work stopped and re-schedule them if VM activity is detected. Previously, an offline CPU would always appear to have a zero load and this would distort the offload functionality used for balancing big and little domains. This patch introduces the basic SCHED_HMP infrastructure. Each class of cpus is represented by a hmp_domain and tasks will only be moved between these domains when their load profiles suggest it is beneficial. SCHED_HMP relies heavily on the task load-tracking introduced in Paul Turners fair group scheduling patch set: <https://lkml.org/lkml/2012/8/23/267> SCHED_HMP requires that the platform implements arch_get_hmp_domains() which should set up the platform specific list of hmp_domains. It is also assumed that the platform disables SD_LOAD_BALANCE for the appropriate sched_domains. Tasks placement takes place every time a task is to be inserted into a runqueue based on its load history. The task placement decision is based on load thresholds. There are no restrictions on the number of hmp_domains, however, multiple (>2) has not been tested and the up/down migration policy is rather simple. 2013-07-13futex: Take hugepages into account when generating futex_keyZhang Yi
commit 13d60f4b6ab5b702dc8d2ee20999f98a93728aec upstream. The futex_keys of process shared futexes are generated from the page offset, the mapping host and the mapping index of the futex user space address. This should result in an unique identifier for each futex. Though this is not true when futexes are located in different subpages of an hugepage. The reason is, that the mapping index for all those futexes evaluates to the index of the base page of the hugetlbfs mapping. So a futex at offset 0 of the hugepage mapping and another one at offset PAGE_SIZE of the same hugepage mapping have identical futex_keys. This happens because the futex code blindly uses page->index. Steps to reproduce the bug: 1. Map a file from hugetlbfs. Initialize pthread_mutex1 at offset 0 and pthread_mutex2 at offset PAGE_SIZE of the hugetlbfs mapping. The mutexes must be initialized as PTHREAD_PROCESS_SHARED because PTHREAD_PROCESS_PRIVATE mutexes are not affected by this issue as their keys solely depend on the user space address. 2. Lock mutex1 and mutex2 3. Create thread1 and in the thread function lock mutex1, which results in thread1 blocking on the locked mutex1. 4. Create thread2 and in the thread function lock mutex2, which results in thread2 blocking on the locked mutex2. 5. Unlock mutex2. Despite the fact that mutex2 got unlocked, thread2 still blocks on mutex2 because the futex_key points to mutex1. To solve this issue we need to take the normal page index of the page which contains the futex into account, if the futex is in an hugetlbfs mapping. In other words, we calculate the normal page mapping index of the subpage in the hugetlbfs mapping. Mappings which are not based on hugetlbfs are not affected and still use page->index. Thanks to Mel Gorman who provided a patch for adding proper evaluation functions to the hugetlbfs code to avoid exposing hugetlbfs specific details to the futex code. 2013-07-01clk: Vexpress-spc: Add clock driverViresh Kumar
This patch adds spc clock controller. In Vexpress cpu cluster clock is controlled via spc controller and so it must be present in clk framework. vexpress_clk_[of_]register_spc() registers cluster clocks with and without DT. These are added as root clocks without any parents and their names are "cluster[0|1|..]". Now, platform must add clocks of all the cpus below these clusters. cpufreq driver would get cpu clock and will do clk_get[set]_rate() on cpu clock, which will then pass it to cluster clocks. 2013-07-01drivers: mfd: vexpress: add Serial Power Controller (SPC) supportLorenzo Pieralisi
The TC2 versatile express core tile integrates a logic block that provides the interface between the dual cluster test-chip and the M3 microcontroller that carries out power management. The logic block, called Serial Power Controller (SPC), contains several memory mapped registers to control among other things low-power states, operating points and reset control. This patch provides a driver that enables run-time control of features implemented by the SPC control logic. The driver also provides a bridge interface through the vexpress config infrastructure. Operations allowing to read/write operating points are made to go via the same interface as configuration transactions so that all requests to M3 are serialized. Device tree bindings documentation for the SPC component is provided with the patchset. 2013-07-01drivers: mfd: refactor the vexpress config bridge APIPawel Moll
The introduction of Serial Power Controller (SPC) requires the vexpress config interface to change slightly since the SPC memory mapped interface can be used as configuration bus but also for operating points programming and retrieval. The helper that allocates the bridge functions requires an additional parameter allowing to request component specific functions that need not be initialized through device tree bindings but just using simple look-up and statically defined constants. This patch introduces the necessary changes to the vexpress config layer to cater for the new vexpress bridge interface requirements. 2013-07-01drivers: bus: add ARM CCI supportLorenzo Pieralisi
On ARM multi-cluster systems coherency between cores running on different clusters is managed by the cache-coherent interconnect (CCI). It allows broadcasting of TLB invalidates and memory barriers and it guarantees cache coherency at system level through snooping of slave interfaces connected to it. This patch enables the basic infrastructure required in Linux to handle and programme the CCI component. Non-local variables used by the CCI management functions called by power down function calls after disabling the cache must be flushed out to main memory in advance, otherwise incoherency of those values may occur if they are sitting in the cache of some other CPU when power down functions execute. Driver code ensures that relevant data structures are flushed from inner and outer caches after the driver probe is completed. CCI slave port resources are linked to set of CPUs through bus masters phandle properties that link the interface resources to masters node in the device tree. These options allow the developer to count the number of underruns and to control the color used by HDLCD when an underrun prevents accessing pixel data. 2013-06-26net: fix kernel deadlock with interface rename and netdev name retrieval.Nicolas Schichan
When the kernel (compiled with CONFIG_PREEMPT=n) is performing the rename of a network interface, it can end up waiting for a workqueue to complete. If userland is able to invoke a SIOCGIFNAME ioctl or a SO_BINDTODEVICE getsockopt in between, the kernel will deadlock due to the fact that read_secklock_begin() will spin forever waiting for the writer process (the one doing the interface rename) to update the devnet_rename_seq sequence. This patch fixes the problem by adding a helper (netdev_get_name()) and using it in the code handling the SIOCGIFNAME ioctl and SO_BINDTODEVICE setsockopt. The netdev_get_name() helper uses raw_seqcount_begin() to avoid spinning forever, waiting for devnet_rename_seq->sequence to become even. cond_resched() is used in the contended case, before retrying the access to give the writer process a chance to finish. The use of raw_seqcount_begin() will incur some unneeded work in the reader process in the contended case, but this is better than deadlocking the system. This is required by the big.LITTLE switcher code. The gic_migrate_target() changes the CPU interface mapping for the current CPU to redirect SGIs to the specified interface, and it also updates the target CPU for each interrupts to that CPU interface if they were targeting the current interface. Finally, pending SGIs for the current CPU are forwarded to the new interface. Because Linux does not use it, the SGI source information for the forwarded SGIs is not preserved. Neither is the source information for the SGIs sent by the current CPU to other CPUs adjusted to match the new CPU interface mapping. Because the function tracer does a preempt_disable/enable_notrace() calls the preempt_enable_notrace() checks the NEED_RESCHED flag. If it is set, then preempt_schedule() is called. But this is called before the user_exit() function can inform the kernel that the CPU is no longer in user mode and needs to be accounted for by RCU. The fix is to create a new preempt_schedule_context() that checks if the kernel is still in user mode and if so to switch it to kernel mode before calling schedule. It also switches back to user mode coming back from schedule in need be. The only user of this currently is the preempt_enable_notrace(), which is only used by the tracing subsystem. With a MIPS OCTEON config, we use on_each_cpu() in our irq_chip.irq_bus_sync_unlock() function. This gets called in early as a result of the time_init() call.
